Our Children’s Dental Health Coordinators go back to school!

Mrs Heather Cresswell and Mrs Lorraine Allen are having interactive educational talks with primary school children in the Plymouth area. They are proving very popular, especially with the help of Henry, our lovable Brushasorous!

What do we do?

The talented duo visit schools on an arranged time and day to deliver an hour of fun. With lots of enthusiasm, we classify good and bad food and drinks. We discuss how to look after teeth, and end with a brushing demonstration. Depending on the size of the class, Heather and Lorraine also get the children up and moving around.

‘We cannot believe how brilliant the children have been so far. They have really wanted to get involved and have asked some really good questions,’ Lorraine said, after Monday’s visit to Woodford Primary School in Plympton. ‘They genuinely are eager to answer questions and especially love the brushing activity.’

Lorraine joined our team last year as a receptionist. She has taken on the role of Treatment Coordinator to assist with the school visits.

Heather, our Business Development Manager has worked in Dentistry for over twenty five years. She is booking school visits on a regular basis.

Our presentation helps support the curriculum requirements of Key Stages 1 and 2. We can also adapt the session to your schools age and requirements.

‘The children are keen to learn and this is the ideal age to ensure they know about dental health and how it is so important. My favourite part of our visits are the questions at the end. This week I was asked ‘was I nearly a grown up?’ My reply was ‘Almost’!

Why are we visiting schools?

Children can feel anxious visiting the dentist. It’s an unfamiliar environment peopled by strangers who want to look in their mouths.

We believe it’s so important for children to feel comfortable at the dentist. We find asking children questions, along with them asking us, we create a safe, happy environment, so they feel at ease. Their next trip to the dentist will be easier.

Learning about both dental health and general health is important. Children need to learn to take responsibility for their own well-being. We like to make it fun as well as educational.
