Children’s oral health education, Plymouth.
15th January 2019 | Posted by: SpaDental AdministratorLast week SpaDental Plymouth teamed up with Pomphlett Primary School, working their health education magic together again.
On this visit, Heather Cresswell and Lorraine Allen were talking to Year 1 and 2. They spoke with nearly 100 children aged between four and five about the hidden danger of sugar in their diets. Their inter-active presentation supports health education (PSHE) curriculum requirements, as well as promoting the importance of having a high standard of oral hygiene.
Helping children to brush better.
It’s so important for children to learn how to look after their teeth. Heather and Lorraine accept invitations to go into schools to talk with children. They demonstrate the best brushing skills and stress the importance of having healthy teeth and gums for life.
The SpaDental duo bring fun and laughter to the classroom, especially with their game of good and bad food. They hold up items of food and drink and ask the children to decide which ones they should choose if they want to keep healthy. There’s always lots of excitement when the children get the answers correct.
The fun continues as the children join in a brushing activity. Each child is given a toothbrush and mouth timer to keep, then asked to act out brushing their teeth for two minutes. This is important, as many children don’t actually brush for long enough. It’s far too easy to rush. Demonstrating perfect technique for them is ever helpful Henry the Brushasorous. The kids love him, and his strong, sharp teeth!
Brushing better with Year 1 and 2.
By Year 1, children are becoming more independent, as well as more dexterous. This is a great time to be practicing better brush control.
We’re pleased to report that the children know a lot about hidden sugar in cereals, cakes, biscuits and soft drinks. They also know about the damage some foods can do to their teeth. Moreover, the children kept us on our toes with some excellent questions. When it came to their activity, the children showed great brushing technique.
The children were thrilled with their toothbrushes and timers. We have had it on good authority that the children have been talking about our visit ever since! This is exactly what we want. We want children to understand the importance of brushing, to make good choices about what to eat and drink.
We hope our visits will support the message parents share at home as we all work together to improve children’s oral hygiene, prevent tooth decay and encourage healthy life-style choices.
