Healthy mouth, healthy body

A healthy mouth helps keep a healthy body.  Studies show that looking after your teeth and gums is an important part of a healthy lifestyle trying to lower our risk of complications such as stroke, diabetes, and heart disease.   Studies also indicate a possible link between poor oral heath with problems in pregnancy, lung disease, and dementia.

Gum disease (also called periodontal disease) is an infection of the tissues and bones that surround and support your teeth.   It is mainly caused by bacteria from plaque build-up. Gums become swollen, sore and infected.  Gums may bleed when you brush your teeth, you may have an unpleasant taste in your mouth and bad breath.  If not treated gum disease gets worse and teeth can become loose and eventually fall out.

There is good news too, by taking care of your teeth properly and visiting the dentist regularly you can help prevent problems arising, and maintain your oral health.     Your routine should include brushing your teeth for two minutes twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste, cleaning using floss or interdental brushes and mouthwash all helps, along with stopping smoking.

When you visit the surgery your dental team will remove plaque from your teeth, give them a good clean and remove unsightly staining that you just can’t remove at home with your regular toothbrush.  They will also give you help and information on the best way for you to maintain your oral health between visits.

Our therapists and hygienists are available through ‘direct access’.  This means that you can make an appointment anytime to see them without having to visit the dentist first.

If you are at all concerned about your teeth and gums or just want your teeth cleaned for a special occasion call and book an appointment for a consultation today.
