North/South divide shows in our babies’ teeth

Map to show DHS Dental attendance for babies's teethA recent study by the British Society of Paediatric Dentistry has revealed that children under the age of two years old in the North of England are more than twice as likely to be taken to see an NHS Dentist than infants in the South. Are our babies’ teeth at risk?

Dental professionals are keen to ensure that all children are registered with a dentist almost as soon as they are registered with their GP. At SpaDental we support the current campaign to encourage a Dental Check by One. We highly recommend that parents bring their babies to the surgery before their first birthday.

When do we register infants?

Often parents are unsure when to bring in babies to see the dentist. We advise our families to register and book an appointment for a routine check-up as soon as the first teeth come through – not just for a check on the health of the tooth and surrounding soft tissues, but also to familiarise your child with the dentist and the surgery. We want your child’s first experience at the dentist to be a good one.

Are we doing enough?

Children’s open days are a good way to start. With fun activities, visual aids, competitions, information and leaflets, we can make your child’s visit an enjoyable outing. At the same time, parents can speak with the team who can advise on diet, drinks and brushing.

Contact your local practice to find out when open days are being held, or to make your own arrangements to introduce your baby.
