Maria Shrigley – Trainee Dental Nurse

Meet one of our new trainee dental nurses – Maria Shrigley.

Each year we enjoy mentoring trainee dental nurses. We believe that their professional development also impacts on out learning and development as a dental practice, keeping us on our toes. When we have trainees, we have to spend time discussing our procedures and practices. This reflective practice is good for us all,  and it ensures we keep current with new developments in our profession.

We asked Maria to put into words why she wanted to train and qualify as a Dental Nurse.

“Dental nursing has always interested me because the role is very varied. You can be surgery based, work in operating theatres, work in the decontamination room, or be front of house on reception, or all of the above! There’s always plenty of opportunity and no time wasted!

Qualifying as a Dental Nurse can lead to different routes, but I feel best suited to remain surgery based, having previously had roles within a hospital setting.

I much prefer seeing patients in the surgery, conversing with them and applying my skills to aid my patients through their treatment from start to finish.

For me, this is what I love. The involvement with my patients, and helping them though the process, so they come out smiling at the end!

I also have a keen interest in helping nervous patients.  Working alongside the dentist, I will be helping with sedation for our particularly anxious patients in the coming months. I am very much looking forward to this. I’ll be able to help our patients through what can be a very daunting journey for them.

Since I began at SpaDental I have felt great job satisfaction. I enjoy seeing my patients every day, and I know I will be a Dental Nurse until I retire!”

Maria joined the SpaDental Plymouth practice in April 2017 and has become a valuable member of our team.
