From off-white to darker shades of yellow, there’s a wide range of natural tooth colour. But it seems that all we want these days is a whiter smile!
Check out the shelves of your local chemist or supermarket and you’ll marvel at how many products there are now that promise whiter teeth. And as we all want whiter teeth, then what is the best way to get them?
Be careful!
There are some scary stories out there! Home-made remedies, usually involving lemon juice, strawberries or bicarbonate of soda, can be harmful. There are at-home bleaching kits for sale too, but without customised trays the liquid can leak into the mouth or cause patchy results. Be careful of weakening tooth enamel or harming sensitive gum and mouth tissue.
Ask your dentist!
Your dentist is the professional who understands teeth, and can give you advice about how to make them whiter, without damaging the protective enamel or sensitive gums. We must remember that although companies research and develop great products for the shelves, they don’t know our teeth or our habits.
Drinking coffee or red wine, for example, causes external discolouration of your teeth. Sometimes illness, or the use of certain antibiotics, causes internal discolouration, and trauma to a tooth may cause just one tooth to darken. Your dentist will be able to identify the cause of discolouration and recommend how to proceed if you want whiter teeth. Sometimes a whitening treatment may be the answer, or perhaps a veneer is a better solution.
A consultation with your dentist will help you to plan the best, most effective treatment.
