Meet Jo Roberts, trainee dental nurse

jo roberts, trainee dental nurseIf you’ve been into our surgery lately, you’ll have seen a new face.  Jo Roberts, trainee dental nurse, joined the practice in January, and is really enjoying the experience!

We asked Jo, why she decided to become a dental nurse. Here’s what she said:

“I’ve always wanted to work with people, as that’s what makes each day different! I have an NVQ in Childhood Studies, and worked in day nurseries for over fifteen years. Before coming to SpaDental, I worked in a Secondary School. It was fun being with teenagers too.

The great thing about working in a dental surgery is that we get to meet all kinds of people during the day, and we can help them to feel better. I feel very lucky to have been able to make a career change. I’ve always been interested in health, and I’m very happy this opportunity came up. I’m in the surgery every weekday, and learning a lot from my colleagues. The course I’m on will take me 18 months to complete. For me, it’s good to be able to combine practical work with learning the theory.

When I’m not working I love spending time with my daughter – she’s 8 now. We enjoy fun days out, and I love socialising with family and friends. I also like to spend time running and exercising.”

Jo Roberts, trainee dental nurse, is enrolled on the Progress to Excellence diploma course in Dental Nursing.

SpaDental believes mentoring trainees is important. The regular staff appreciate the enthusiasm and curiosity that new learners bring with them. Answering questions certainly keeps us on our toes! It helps us all to reflect on what we do, and why, as well as  how we do it. Supporting learning, professional development and in-service training, is an important part of our professional practice.
