Take time to talk – time to reach out to a friend or colleague.
The Time to Change campaign is led by Mind and Rethink Mental Illness. The focus of this special day is to help us all realise that just by being there to say a few words, we can support someone. We just need to make a little time to talk.
Today, our focus is on taking time to talk.
To talk – not to ‘chat’ or to ‘socialise’, to ‘like’ or ‘engage’. But to connect in real time, whether face to face, side by side, or by text or a call.
For the message to be meaningful, it needs to be personal. It’s the recognition of our own selves as individuals apart from a group that makes us feel valued.
Be aware of changes in behaviour patterns:
- haven’t heard anything recently?
- social media use different?
- said something unsettling?
- some marks that could be self-harm?
- signs of stress?
- more withdrawn?
- change in appearance?
It’s best to act on a feeling that’s something’s not quite right. Reach out.
Here are some tips to help open up a dialogue:
- start small – just a one-liner, or a text, is an opener
- find a good place to talk – side by side can be easier than face to face
- be open – sharing something personal opens up a dialogue that builds trust
- ask questions – but be sensitive to comfort levels and boundaries
- don’t just talk – listen too!
There are so many different ways our mental health can be undermined. To help our clearer understanding, here’s a useful A-Z of terminology and clear explanations.
This video shows how one friend appreciates the support he was offered when he needed it. It’s not all touchy-feely, it’s practical.
We are sharing this message with you because we support everyone’s overall well-being, as well as oral health.
