Would I give up smoking for others? It’s a good question to think about before No Smoking Day. It may help you to get though the day, and the one after too. It could motivate you to become smoke-free.
Why should I give up smoking?
If you’re a smoker, ask yourself: Would I? Why?
Ten personal reasons to quit smoking:
- Live longer – SMOKING KILLS! So quit smoking now.
- Family matters – it’s not just about the smoker. Second-hand smoke affects others too.
- Better sex – male or female, smoking can damage your sex life.
- Look younger– smoking discolours skin and hair and increases wrinkles. Smokers look older than they are.
- Smell better – smokers’ breath is bad, and the smell of cigarettes stays in hair, clothes and on the skin.
- It makes sense – smoking damages taste buds and affects the sense of smell.
- Save money – with the average pack of twenty costing around £10 why burn cash?
- Convenience – no more standing outside to smoke in the wind and rain!
- Healthier mouth – smoking discolours teeth and increases the build-up of plaque which leads to bad breath.
- Be fitter – your lungs and heart will be impaired, so cardio workouts are hard, sometimes even walking can be a challenge.
If you’re a smoker, reason no.1 should be the decider.

Getting a bit repetitive?
So now add on these important motivators:
- Second-hand smoke is a killer. It comes from the lit end of a cigarette, and from exhaled smoke.
- Second-hand smoke contains arsenic, which can be found in rat poison
- It also contains benzene, found in petrol fumes and linked to leukemia
- And there’s cyanide, too
- Then there are other irritants and toxins, including at least 50 other carcinogens (that cause cancer)
People who breathe in secondhand smoke are at risk of the same diseases as smokers, including cancer and heart disease.
