“How was school today?”
For many children lunch break is the best bit of the school day! It’s a time to be with friends, eat and chat. And if you ask the question, “How was school today?” you’ll probably be told what was for lunch! Most children will put food first, especially whether it was good or not, rather than explain how the literacy hour went, or the Art class. Children need food for thought!
Eating the right food’s important for leaning.
School lunches in the UK have had a lot of attention this century, and are much better now. One of the aims of International School Meals Day is to “emphasise the connection between healthy eating, education and better learning”.
Children need to learn about food, and need food to learn!
Healthy eating is a topic dear to our dentists’ hearts! We’ve written often about how many children suffer from tooth decay, rising levels of obesity, and we champion the connection between food and learning, nutrition and health. Encouraging children to make the right choices is important, or they won’t be choosing the right things to eat when they’re at school. Their health and their learning will suffer. We all have to learn to make choices that are good for us.
Dental Checks for Children
It’s good to get children used to going to the dentist young. We recommend a trip to the dentist after a baby’s first tooth has come through, and before reaching a year old. It’s very upsetting if their first appointment is for a dental emergency or to have a filling. SpaDental practices have regular children’s days, during half-terms and holidays, when we prioritise appointments for our young patients. Contact your nearest surgery to find out more.
Food for thought! The theme for 2018 is “My food!”- International School Meals Day, 2018
