Dementia Action Week 2018 – our thought, our support, makes a difference.

The Alzheimer’s Society is asking us to: “Take an action and stand united with people affected by dementia.” Dementia Action Week 2018 begins today.

What action can I take?

The week focuses on seven key actions that people with dementia would appreciate.

They ask:

Keeping these in mind can help us to improve the lives of people living with dementia.

How does dementia impact on dental health?

Good oral health is important for general health and to maintain self-esteem. Sometimes people need some help to keep up a good oral hygiene routine.

Maintaining good oral health to avoid gum disease and the pain of dental decay is important for good nutrition too.

As dementia progresses, the person with dementia may not remember to brush teeth, may forget its importance, perhaps not be able to find the tools, or struggle to follow the procedure. Appointments with the dentist or hygienist may not be made, or may be forgotten.

What can I do to help?

If you’re a carer, there are many ways you already offer support. Just one of those ways is to help with dental health routines. In the earlier stages, the person with dementia should brush her or his own teeth.

Later on, you can help to brush teeth too. Have the person you care for sit on a straight backed chair.  Standing behind as they tilt their head back a little against you. Use a dry brush and a pea-sized amount of paste. Talk to the person while you’re doing it, making your actions clear in advance.

Dementia Action Week reminds us to reach out to people with dementia to help them feel included and cared for.
