Screen time really can damage your teeth.
This morning on breakfast radio, Rob and Matilda (Capital Birmingham) were chatting about unlikely accidents. What are the chances of getting a chipped tooth by dropping your mobile phone on it? Of all the health dangers linked to phones, this one is definitely real!
Imagine the scenario: you’re lying on your bed, arms extended overhead, which is a good arm workout and also gets the screen in the optimum viewing position. You laugh, and before you know it your phone’s fallen on your face. Just a slip, and you’re left with a chipped tooth.
Four more common ways to get a chipped tooth.
We all want great teeth for life, so here are a few things to keep in mind to avoid chips:
- Sports injuries are the most common cause of chips, broken and knocked out teeth. Wearing a mouth guard helps protect vulnerable teeth.
- Mouth jewellery, such as a tongue or cheek piercing, or a grill, can weaken and damage the enamel of teeth, often leading to small chips and cracks. Any metal in your mouth that’s not put in there by a dentist, can be a problem.
- Using your teeth as tools, or even chewing things that are too hard (ice, for example) can cause damage.
- Tooth decay weakens teeth. Fillings, however well done, are only repairs. A good oral hygiene routine will help to prevent cavities.
What to do if you get a chipped tooth:
- Call your dentist straight away, as it’s best to get a professional opinion as soon as possible.
- Try to see how much damage there is. Bleeding that won’t stop and swelling that’s increasing counts as a dental emergency.
- If the damage is just a chip to the enamel, a composite bond may be used to restore the appearance of the tooth.
- More extensive damage may need a crown or veneer, but your dentist will talk you through your options.
- Don’t ignore a chip, as it can open up a pathway for bacteria, leading to infection and decay. Make an appointment with your dentist.
