This week is a good time to talk about diabetes. Diabetes UK says: “Talking about diabetes can be tough, but it doesn’t have to be.” They invite you to share your stories, top tips, and offer support to other people living with a diagnosis of diabetes.
More than ever.
In England alone, according to figures released at the end of last year, nearly 3.2 million people have diagnosed diabetes.
Diabetes UK is concerned. “More people than ever have diabetes… If nothing changes, more than five million people will have diabetes in the UK by 2025.”
The impact of diabetes on oral health.
As dentists, we are concerned about the general health of our patients, and also the effect that health problems can cause to the teeth and mouth. People who have diabetes, especially if blood-sugar levels are not consistently maintained, are more likely to suffer dental health issues.
Oral health issues that people with diabetes are prone to are:
- dry mouth
- oral thrush
- gum inflammation
- periodontitis
- tooth decay
Here are a few tips to help out:
- Talk to your dentist: Your dentist needs to know what medications you’re taking, if you’re taking insulin, and if your blood sugar level is variable.
- Step up your oral hygiene routine:
- Brush your teeth 30 minutes after each meal with a soft bristled brush.
- Floss daily.
- Use inter-dental brushes.
- Rinse with antiseptic mouth wash once a day.
- Drink water regularly.
- Avoid snacks between meals.
- If you wear removable dentures, take them out at night.
- Book regular appointments with your dental hygienist or therapist: With direct access appointments to oral hygiene services, you have more options to help maintain a healthy mouth and teeth.
Why not talk about diabetes and the impact it can have on oral health with your dentist?
Your dentist will be able to help you to take care of this aspect of your health.

The increasing number of children being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes is a concern. If you’re visiting your dentist, it’s okay to ask what you should be doing about your child’s general health. We’re interested in the whole person, not just their mouth!
