A worrying time for children’s oral health.
At SpaDental Plymouth, we too are concerned about the education and health of pre-school children. In support of the NHS initiative for dentists to see an additional 70,000 pre-school children this year, we are reaching out to spread the news that we are accepting new NHS patient registrations for infants, children and teens. We believe that children’s oral health is important.
Our aim is to ensure that children do not have to suffer the unnecessary pain of tooth decay.
Prevention is better than cure.
We believe that the younger children learn to take care of their teeth, the better their chances of a healthy mouth later in life.
While the NHS is campaigning for babies to be taken to the dentist and registered before turning a year old, it’s a sad fact that too many children don’t attend the dentist regularly.
Too often children are only taken when there’s a problem or an accident.
Our practice focuses on teaching good habits and preventive dentistry.
How will we do this?
- We are encouraging parents or guardians to contact us to register children for appointments as new NHS patients.
- We actively promote children’s dental health by organising special Children’s Days.
- Our next Children’s Day is on Tuesday, 31st July, and there is another on Thursday, 23rd August. We are prioritising appointments for children on these days by adding additional surgery hours specifically for children.
- On Children’s Days we focus on children, so they can feel more relaxed and comfortable in the surgery.
We hold Children’s Days every school holiday and half-term break, so children can attend without missing school.
How can we help with education?
There are several ways we can help you to safeguard the teeth of children at school:
- Although we can’t do personal dental checks in nurseries or schools, we are able to come in to talk with the children.
- We know that schools are already teaching nutrition and oral hygiene as part of the PSHE curriculum, but we would be able to add to the programme.
- We want to actively support the fact that with good education about preventive care, tooth decay is 95% preventable.
- All our staff have valid DBS checks and they are good at talking to children. We will keep their young minds engaged and learning!
