Government action plan targeting childhood obesity.

“The rise in severe obesity and widening health inequalities highlight why bold measures are needed to tackle this threat to our children’s health.”The chief nutritionist at Public Health England (PHE).

Earlier this year, we saw the introduction of the “sugar tax”, tackling sugary drinks with the Soft Drinks Industry Levy (SDIL). This was followed in June by the government release of “Childhood obesity: a plan for action Chapter 2“. In a thirty page document, the government outlines the second stage of a strategic plan targeting childhood obesity until 2030.

Why do we need a plan targeting childhood obesity?

The concerns are genuine. Excess weight can compromise children’s health as outlined in “Childhood Obesity A Plan for Action”:

What steps are already underway?

The points below summarise the main aims stated in the first chapter of the government plan targeting childhood obesity.

How will the new plan build on current progress?

The plan targeting childhood obesity is an enormous challenge as it confronts the commercial giants of the food and drink industry. Already some manufacturers have introduced voluntary improvements, such as traffic-light labelling.  Significantly, some businesses are making changes to their products, altering recipes to reduce sugar.

Finally, parents, educators, health practitioners, local authorities and even children will need to play their part too, to reduce childhood obesity.
