Sober October is good for ourselves.

“Oh no! October is a long month. Why can’t it be February?”

Think day by day, and the time will pass quickly. It’s a great opportunity to give our body and our mind a break from the toxic affects of alcohol as with each new morning, after a better night’s sleep, you feel more energetic and clearer headed.

Sober October is good for others.

• The Go Sober in October campaign is run by Macmillan Cancer Support.
• Sign up to take part. It helps make it official, so there’s no backing out.
• Raise funds! Spread the word and encourage your friends to take part too.
• Donate money to help people living with cancer.

We all know that  alcohol isn’t good for our general health.

Go for a Sober October and look forward to:

• improved sleep.
• a clearer head.
• higher energy.
• fresher-looking skin.
• more money in hand.
• a great sense of achievement each day.

Giving up alcohol gives our teeth and oral health a break too.

Did you know drinking alcohol can cause:

• a dry mouth, which means there’s less anti-bacterial saliva to protect our teeth and gums.
• weakened tooth enamel, because of the acid content.
• increased tooth decay because of the sugar content.
• an increased risk of mouth cancer.
• an environment that hosts bacteria causing gum disease, and tooth loss.
• a higher risk of broken or knocked out teeth caused by falls or fights.

To help you do Sober October, here are some tips.

• Drink lots of water, and think about what else you can drink instead. But try not to replace alcohol with something that damages your teeth. Steer clear of fizzy, sugary drinks and those energy drinks.
•  Keep busy, and try to build more exercise into your day. Steer clear of situations when you’d normally have a drink, especially during the first week.
• Take it one day at a time. As you count up the days, it gets easier.
• Declare what you’re doing to your friends. Announce it to all on social media. That way there’s no turning back.

Most of all, feel good that you’ve made the decision to help people living with cancer.

What if chasing around fund-raising from other people isn’t for me?

Put the money you’d normally spend on alcohol to one side. On 1 November, donate it with pride to Macmillan Cancer Support. 

It’s a good decision.
