Sometimes patients believe they need veneers to make a difference, yet less expensive, more minimal treatments are sometimes enough to make a noticeable difference.

For example, the dentist may first recommend having your teeth straightened with clear braces, as this helps move teeth into their best position. Then, once your teeth are straighter, and have been whitened too, you may decide that no more changes are needed. A staged approach can be helpful as part of the decision making process, and save money too!

Is the process difficult?

Having veneers is not painful or especially difficult. In fact, having veneers is an excellent way of improving your smile with very little discomfort.

It is important to realise, however, that the process involves removing a fine layer of enamel from the front surface of the tooth. People with sensitive teeth may find this uncomfortable. Moreover, it also means that you will always need a veneer or some other protection, such as a crown, to cover your tooth. It’s not a reversible process.

Which materials are best for veneers?

Porcelain veneers reflect light the same way as tooth enamel does, so they match natural teeth well. Moreover, porcelain doesn’t stain in the same way that tooth enamel, or composite resin, does. This means that with a set of porcelain veneers your teeth will stay looking fresh.

What will my veneers look like?

Done badly, veneered teeth can look unnatural. If you are considering veneers, we recommend you go to your usual dentist. Go to a dentist who knows you and your smile – someone you can trust.

For some patients it can be enough to veneer just one tooth, matching it to the colour and shape of your natural teeth. An alteration to just one or two teeth is usually discreet, effective and easy to get used to.
