A German SC-500 bomb dropped on Plymouth during the Second World War caused disruption across Plymouth. With record numbers of people evacuated from their homes it was certainly a significant event. Historians suggest the undetonated bomb remained from a raid on either the 22nd or 23rd of April, 1941.
So as few people as possible were out and about on Friday afternoon, businesses around the city, as well as bus and rail services, were closed down while the bomb was moved by the army to Torpoint. In a carefully planned and closely monitored manoeuvre, the army and navy combined to transport the bomb out to sea.
Experts considered the 500kg bomb was a significant threat to public safety. If a bomb disposal team had detonated it on the site where it was found, it could have caused significant blast and shrapnel damage.
After four days of disruption, the bomb was safely detonated by a bomb disposal diver beyond the breakwater causing a huge water plume, but no damage to people or property.
